  • New Black Ops Multiplayer Trailer!

Call of Duty: Black Ops has been building up more, and more hype, which in turn creating more talk, more speculation. Recently, Treyarch teased about a huge multiplayer reveal. Yesterday, Sept 1st came and gone. What we DIDN’T know, was that the reveal was going to be from a press-only premiere event. I’ve seen some impressions already, so there should be a lot of information to look up. For now, you can check out the full multiplayer reveal:

Here’s what I noticed in the trailer:

    First, the game modes are:

One in the chamber: Everyone in the lobby begins the match with a pistol. Each player has 3 lives. You kill someone, you gain a bullet in your pistol.

Sticks and stones: Everyone starts with ballistic knives, and a crossbow. You also have a tomahawk. If you kill someone with a tomahawk, they’re bankrupt. I’m guessing they lose the two weapons – and rely on picking up a weapon elsewhere.

Gun Game: I think this is an Old School match with a twist; you begin the match with a randomly selected gun. Every person in the lobby has the same randomly selected gun. The catch is, if you die, you lose both a level, and a gun you had in your disposal. However, if you kill someone, you gain a better weapon than you previously had.

Treyarch is dead serious about customization which is what you’ll be seeing from here on out; Treyarch is making the tagline “Compete, Customize and Create” as the slogan for the mulitplayer portion of Black Ops. One of the major changes is the fact that your XP is now known as the “Call of Duty Points.” They’re “money” in the COD world. This means, that every kill that used to net you XP is now seen as a bartering service. You can buy weapons, and equipments with CP. This means, if you buy a weapon or equipment, you’re going to have to regain that amount of CP to continue onto leveling up to the next level or prestige.

Create a Class: There’s a brand new create a class menu; every time you change perks, you change your character’s appearance. The changes are determined by tier 1 perks. If you equip the Flak Jacket perk, you get an armored appearance.

Controls Altered: Treyarch altered the controller setup a bit; the right thumper will activate lethal stuff. While the left thumper will activate any tactical equipment/weapons. There’s a new category for equipment; deployable weapons.

Diving: If you sprint and go prone at the same time, you will dive into the ground.

Highest KillStreak is 11 – Cue the #%@&ing facepalm. Here’s to hoping the killstreaks aren’t customizable as MW2 was.

No Stopping Power. Epic Fail. There’s no countering Flak Jacket users.

Custom Red Dots – Smiley-Holo is just one of the customizable Red Dots for your weapons.

    The KillStreaks are:

    – RC-XD – A remote controlled car that also explodes.
    – Sam Turret – It looks like a turret designed to counter-attack killstreak helicopters/gunships.
    – Grim Reaper – A rocket launcher that explodes at the player or surrounding objects.
    – GunShips – Take control of a gunship. You’re the pilot.

Perks and Camos are unlocked via “Call of Duty Credits.” Not sure if it is the same thing as the CP’s mentioned earlier.

What do you think? Awesome? Crazy? Are you excited? We’ll have more in the coming months as we approach the Nov 9 launch date for the game.

  • Black Ops Multiplayer Teaser Trailer Released!

Activision has been tight-lipped about the multiplayer aspects of Call of Duty: Black Ops. They’ve been hyping more about the single player aspects of the game recently. Being able to fly a hovering helicopter and throwing missiles and causing chaos on lush environments? SIGN ME UP! Black Ops is everywhere – basketball game, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and all over the internet. So, Josh Olin (@JD_2020) released a teaser trailer for COD: Black Ops’ Multiplayer.

What I get from the trailer is that Treyarch has copied almost everything from MW2. But the trade-up here is that there are some new gameplay mechanics teased in here.

Skewer: I don’t know wether I read it right or not, but I’ll give it a stab: “Stealth killed an enemy with the ballistic knife.” Meaning that you can be stealthy in the game. I am getting the feeling that treyarch is looking for more stealthy players.

Security Cameras: At the start of the trailer, we’re introduced to the radar being replaced by a security camera – as you sneak in, you’re being shown from the direction you came in from. And you can actually pick the camera up and use it as you like.

New CallSigns: Introduced in MW2, treyarch implements their own callsigns – and this time, they’re going the mile by awarding people background “titles.”

Crossbow: I think this thing will replace Semtex Grenades entirely for some people; you can throw a stickable arrow at your enemy, and a bomb will go off.

Remote Controlled Cars: This one will be very frustrating for some people. But you can control small cars to crash into people or explode once detonated.

Remote Controlled Missles? Some people are saying it looks like a predator missile, but upon close inspection, it was horizontal, not vertical.

Recordable Matches: I dunno if its for full-game, or its for Game Winning Kill…. but its something that a lot of people have requested and wanted. It looks like you can rewind, fast forward, and all the recording tools, and even better: First person or Third person. You can grab a screenshot, too!

I’m lovin’ what I see so far, hopefully we know more information about Black Ops when they release the full multiplayer trailer on September 1st!

  • Street Fighter X Tekken inbound for Xbox 360 & PS3!

For quite some time, there has been some rumblings about a crossover with Namco Bandai. These rumors started making waves across the gaming community for more than two weeks now, it was said that Capcom’s next project would be a crossover game against Namco. They said there’d be a Namco Vs Capcom game, and will come in two versions – one for Street Fighter/MvC fans, and one for Tekken fans. And people thought that this was going to be the big announcement that Capcom was going to make at Comic-Con, and so, the announcement ensued:

Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games today announced that Street Fighter X Tekken is in development for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. The title will make history as fighters from these two bastions of the fighting genre come together for the very first time.

Utilizing the same technology that powered Street Fighter IV & Super Street Fighter IV, Tekken characters such as Kazuya Mishima and Nina Williams will make the transition into the Street Fighter universe having been re-imagined using the much-loved art style of these seminal titles; while retaining their unique characteristics and signature moves as they go head-to-head with classic brawlers from the Street Fighter franchise in what promises to be the ultimate match up.

As in Street Fighter IV, 2D gameplay will feature fully realized 3D character models battling for domination in both new and familiar highly detailed environments that are brought to life with engaging animations. In addition to modes such as Versus and Training that will feature new enhancements to make the fighting experience more in-depth and enjoyable, Street Fighter X Tekken will include Tag Team combat where players select two fighters to deliver knockout assist attacks and special combos.

The announcement, which took place at Comic-Con in San Diego in front of thousands of Street Fighter fans, was made by the Producer of Street Fighter X Tekken, Yoshinori Ono, and Tekken series Director, Katsuhiro Harada. Commenting on the origins of this project Yoshinori Ono said: “This is history we’re making. Two fighting games that have rivalled each other are finally standing on the same stage. This isn’t just a showdown between Tekken and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games. So I’m going to give it my all.”

  • What is Mega Man Universe?

I’ve posted that Mega Man Universe is coming to XBLA, and PSN. And I couldn’t be more excited about the announcement than I am now! Well, because there are a lot of possibilities of what the game might mean. Of course, the game is essentially a new franchise. A planet of Mega Man workshops? Well, how about a UNIVERSE of workshops from all kinds of planets! *winks* The teaser trailer shows some hints and clues about what Mega Man Universe may mean. A lot of people have been speculating about it may be that Mega Man Universe is going for the whole LittleBigPlanet customization.

Well, that may be true. Capcom for quite some time have been really impressed with the level of customization in LittleBigPlanet. It was quite evident when Capcom released Mega Man Powered Up for PSP. Even then, when players got their hands on LittleBigPlanet, many users were estatic about the possibilities. So, when players created levels based on various franchises. Capcom was floored. They loved what they saw, and never sued Sony for it. Just gave its fans a huge nod. They were more flattered about the fanbase’s intense devotion to Capcom and its various franchises. Mega Man especially.

That’s not all. Capcom has been giving 2.5D some thought. They’ve experimented with it for quite some time, too. Mega Man X was re-made on PSP as Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, and other franchises have gotten the 2.5D treatment. One of them being Bionic Commando being re-made into Bionic Commando Re-Armed for PSN, and XBLA.

Capcom has been watching the fan feedback for quite some time after releasing these games. A highly devoted Mega Man fan went as far as creating a fan-made 2D/3D platformer using the Mega Man template. See for yourself:

But it was this video below, that Capcom went and gave the whole project a huge thumbs up:

As of this writing the video has garnered half a million views. No surprise that he’d be hired by Capcom to do this kind of game, or even inspire Capcom to do something similar. Well, if you pay attention in the youtube video below, watch for it at the 1:26 mark.

Pretty obvious he did something. Pretty obvious that Capcom is noticing a fanbase for this particular series of games.

One last thing: Notice that both LittleBigPlanet and this particular Mega Man 2.5D project has co-op. Are we going to be seeing Co-Op in Mega Man Universe? Finally? The long awaited dream of Co-Op? We’ll find out at Comic-Con or beyond.

  • Mega Man Universe revealed!

Ask anyone, I love Mega Man – No wait, I am extremely passionate about anything Mega Man. So, late yesterday afternoon, Capcom unveiled Mega Man Universe for XBLA, and PSN. They’ve been teasing surprises since E32010. And they kept going, it would be at Comic-Con, but this announcement isn’t the big, earth-shattering Comic-Con surprise they’ve had up their sleeves. Nonetheless, everyone is confused as to where Capcom seems to be going with Mega Man Universe. And what kind of game is it? Capcom released a press release, and a trailer for the game:

Capcom Entertainment, Inc., a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced that Mega Man Universe is coming to Xbox LIVE online entertainment network and PlayStation Store. Mega Man Universe, the latest entry in Capcom’s long-running Mega Man series, will be a revolutionary take on the seminal classic, setting course for a new chapter in classic gaming.

Mega Man games are beloved by fans all over the world. Since their debut in 1987, Mega Man has remained a videogame icon, having starred in more than 140 titles over the last 22 years. The connection he’s made with pop culture at large has extended beyond games and into cartoons, toys, clothing, comics, kid’s meals, and more. Part of that popularity is driven by the series’ ability to evolve over time yet consistently retain the addictive gameplay experience that sets Mega Man games apart.

For the next chapter in this legacy of excellence, Capcom aims to deliver the most creative Mega Man experience yet. In Mega Man Universe, imagination is the star of the game.

“We are thrilled to finally be able to announce Mega Man Universe,” said Kenji Inafune, Head of Research and Development Management for Capcom Entertainment. “This game will break the mold and challenge the conventional wisdom of what a Mega Man game can be. When fans finally get to see it, I believe they’ll envision their most far-out Mega Man dreams coming true.”

Inafune is committed to helping craft a Mega Man experience that meets the highest expectations of Capcom fans. Most recently Mega Man 10 echoed this fact when its classic design and compelling gameplay made it one of the most sought after digital downloads of the year. Gamers can expect Mega Man Universe to bring the core experience fans want while delivering on the promise of innovation that Capcom is known for. Its official: classic gaming will never be same again.

Here’s the announcement trailer of the game, enjoy!

I will post an article about the possibilities of what Mega Man Universe is. There’s a lot of ’em.

  • Resurgence Pack is worth $15

Its been a while since I’ve talked about anything related to Modern Warfare 2. I posted an article about Resurgence Pack in May. It was not available for PS3 until July 6th. I have gone ahead and purchased the Resurgence Package for the PS3 version of MW2. Is it better than Stimulus Pack? In a word: Yes. This is the map pack you want.

There are 5 maps in all; 3 are brand-new, 2 are old maps. I’m going to break them down and review what makes them charming ….Or not charming.

Trailer Park: I think this map is great. Its mostly a run n’gun map, but this map has too many camping spots that make it easy for campers, and it’s a little harder to counter them in some game modes. Domination for example, one of the flags will be located at the far end of the map, where the truck is. Its lower, so every time you go there, CHECK your corner[s] because campers use this spot to their advantage. Especially when people come through a trailer truck. So, when you’re in the trailer, check windows first. However, it is easy to win bombsite matchtypes.

The only best part[s] of the map is simply the swimming pool, and the fact that you can run n’gun, provided you’re careful when running; a lot of campers use the trailer trucks as “cover” so you pay more attention to running than them.

Carnival: Carnival is the most creative map in any map yet. I think its one of the best ones – and its evident. Robert Bowling said that the map has been in development longer than any of the maps thus far. The team paid a lot of attention to detail in this map. It is also one of the most fun maps to be on, because while there are a lot of camping spots, there is a lot of creative ways to duke it out on the map. I’m sort of disappointed that they didn’t include a room full of mirrors like most carnivals usually have. It would have added an element of gameplay that hasn’t been touched before in an FPS game.

However, it is very creative, you can walk onto some of the amusement rides – but only to a point. This map is best for team-based games. A lot of the firefights take place almost everywhere, except for the small areas of the map. The one thing I wish, tho, is a night-time carnival, and I mean this in the way that the map isn’t an abandoned carnival, rather, a working-order kind of carnival. But I do understand this wouldn’t work because there isn’t Night Vision Goggles – so once you shoot the lights, it will be hard to walk around.

Fuel: Now, let me set the record straight. I thought this was a re-hash of Rust, and I thought it was going to be a boring map. I was wrong; Infinity Ward: THIS is how you do a really good, balanced-out team-based map. THIS is how you #%@&ing do it! I say this, because its one of the best multiplayer team-based maps known to man. There’s a lot of integrated rooms, a lot of creative ways to get from A to B. And likewise, it takes long to get from A to B, which helps prolong some matchtypes.

Yes, there’s some camping, but its not as bad as it is in a lot of the big maps.

The COD4 maps in Resurgence Pack has gotten a lot of overhaul in terms of overall design. In Vacant, the wall that resides next to the shipping containers are now replaced with a cagey wall. The loading deck building has gotten a bunch of new pipes on when in COD4, it used to be a flat wall. And some windows actually have windows that you can break.

Vacant: When I first saw the map on YouTube, I was estatic. I thought Vacant looked so Beautiful. GORGEOUS! I had a lot of fun learning the ropes in Vacant for MW2. Almost everyone can see each other without using the darkness to their advantage. I also noticed that the lightsourcing done in this map – I haven’t seen this in any map for any FPS. Good Job, Infinity Ward. I hope this is just a taste of things to come.

I mean, there are some parts where the light source[s] reflect onto another wall. That is great. Whoever did that needs a raise. Its also in Strike, I’ll get to that in a minute.

As usual, Vacant is a great map – I had a lot of fun on Vacant in MW2. I had to adjust my style a bit, but its all the same. It takes a little bit of adjustment, nothing major. Other than that, Vacant is GORGEOUS. Absolutely gorgeous.

Strike: Strike is the one with the most overhauls. Some areas has been changed – excuse me, not some. A lot of areas have been changed. What used to be an empty kitchen changed into a very detailed-looking kitchen, and there’s a back door for it. What used to be an empty restaurant is now a detailed looking restaurant. What used to be an empty bunch of buildings have been added a few stuff here and there. Some areas have been painted in various different colors. But I think in this map you’d need a lot of adjustments – I’ve had some problems with my playstyle because of the enormous amount of changes. What used to be a sniper HQ is now a camping haven. In COD4, you can just waltz in and shoot upstairs, but in MW2, when you went into the room, you’re dead on sight.

To learn more about how I felt about Modern Warfare 2, and Stimulus Package – the review is here, and the Stimulus Pack article is here.

  • Its Live, Its On. Its OnLive.

Its Live, Its On. Its OnLive.

OnLive just has been publicly launched – right after the conclusion of E32010. I registered to OnLive’s Founding Member program a few months ago, a month later, I got qualified. When the service launched, it took Onlive a week just getting californians (myself included) activated. It was a first-come, first-serve basis. No one is cut in front of the line.

When I installed it, I had problems with installation; my anti-virus/spyware suite caught the download of the client as a “threat” – so I couldn’t play for a while. I tried going into the Onlive website, and downloading it again – I bump into yet, another problem. Onlive doesn’t recognize me as a customer [more here].

I sent a support e-mail, no e-mail back, but instead, the service was improved a week later. They updated the service’s firmware. This resulted in better and smoother program progression. So, I ran the installation again because I found setup STILL in my folder – hm, strange. I thought my virus/spyware suite deleted it. I went ahead and allowed OnLive’s installation, and lo and behold: ONLIVE IS WORKING!

    Okay, so, what is OnLive?

OnLive, Inc. is advertising the service as “OnDemand for the video game industry.” But it isn’t different from what Microsoft is providing with their “Games On Demand” or Xbox Live’s Marketplace or Arcade services. The PlayStation Store provides the same thing, as well. What’s so special? Welcome to Cloud Gaming.

    What is Cloud Gaming?

Cloud Hosting is nothing new, its been a trend that’s been happening for quite some time. Its been growing since the inception, but nowhere near the mainstream acception yet. This could change once OnLive proves that the business model that its been providing for two weeks now – is a profitable business. OnLive’s hidden agenda is to make Cloud Hosting a mainstream business. Everyone is still using regular servers right now, and its not changing anytime soon, unless OnLive markets its service as a high quality product. And that they make the point that cloud hosting is best for products that require a lot of processing power. For example, those iphone games that use an intensive amount of 3D programming? Those will be changed to cloud hosting if Apple or any of its 3rd party developers wishes to go the extra mile to provide games that is of Dreamcast-quality, or close to PS3/Xbox 360 specs. iPad will get the same treatment.

If Apple wants Modern Warfare on its iphone, or ipad, its going to need either a massive, massive amount of servers to hold that many users at once while providing the same graphics quality that is already in COD4/MW2 or get cloud hosting that will handle both without lag problems.

Let me put it another way so that you can understand why Cloud Hosting is both powerful and important for Onlive games. Lets say OnLive wants blu-ray movies on its servers and millions of people download those movies at once – [when you download from a clouded server it’s instant] the server(s) won’t falter because you’re actually “streaming” the cloud. Whereas when you download blu-ray HD movies from a regular server, you’re going to have to sit through an hour’s worth of ‘loading’ screen (something that gamers are wary of) if you’re on cable, but on DSL and other connections it could take a little longer. Do you understand the difference?

    Okay, so how’s OnLive?

Once you start OnLive, you will be treated to a really cool loading screen – one that is seamless. It goes from something that looks like a movie, to an interface of your account. At first, I didn’t believe it could be possible, because it’s something that it looks like something Microsoft is capable of doing. Which is impressive for a small incorporated company. The first thing you will notice is that the graphics is simple, but smooth, as if it was a PS3 interface. When you start going into other sections of the service you will be amazed at how smooth literally, EVERYTHING moves. Everything.

When you move the cursors over something else, it pops out, and at 60fps. Once again, this is something a console should be doing right now. Now, let me get into the interesting features of the service.

The best thing about looking around in the onlive service is seeing EVERYTHING happening all at once – as if I’m watching thousands of tournaments at once. I feel like I’m at a bar, or a super bowl celebration, or a world cup celebration, an exciting event where everyone is spectating other teams kick each other’s nuts or something.

    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!

    OnLive Arena

What is it: When you’re playing, whether it be single player, or multiplayer – others have the option of watching you play, this is called “Spectating.”

Comments: This section of the service will get a lot of attention once there is enough customers registered and are players. I see this being used a lot during tournament games. I said it at a forum called OnLiveFans, and I’ll say it again: One match may very well become the most legendary match of all time. Because Onlive supports Mac, PC, IPhone, IPad, the upcoming Onlive MicroConsole – I see this section as the “youtube” of gaming. This means, that if you have thousands of thousands of fans – they can find your arena, and spectate your match.

This Arena seems reminiscent of what we saw in a movie called “Gamer.” One day, OnLive or another company will stream your match on a New York television screen.

    OnLive Brag Clips

What is it: It records the last 5 seconds of gameplay. If you want to make a brag clip – it’s alt + b, if you happen to a have an Xbox 360 controller for PC: Hold the Xbox button and press “B.” You can have 10 to 15 brag clips per account. So, use them wisely.

Comments: People are using brag clips for ridiculous reasons, and there is a backlash for these types of people. Some are saying its useless. But I find it the best thing about the service because it can show what a great player you can be.

Well, looks interesting, how about playing the actual games?

In the current state, the service has some hiccups here and there. But overall, its impressive that I can play Boarderlands from my browser without having to install the actual game. I can play the game as if I was playing the actual PC game.

What problems are there so far?

In my initial playthrough, I experienced a lot of stuttering from Onlive – I thought it was just me, but alas, I have found the same complaint by several users. On top of this, I found some CPU warnings on the lower right end of my screen. I was puzzled and confused by it, because I’m running a powerful 2gig processor, with a nice ATI graphics card, and 2gig memory – should be more than enough to handle the games.

I’m not saying that OnLive can’t fix these problems; they can. And they will. They’ve been working on this for 7 years according to the C.E.O. of OnLive, Inc. By no means, am I saying OnLive sucks – it just has a bump in its road to success. It has the potential to become a great product, the only thing they need to focus more on: MARKETING! Yes! The fun part!

Rare’s new game is a Kinect launch title

Rare is a legendary game studio that developed some of the greatest games ever. From Sabre Wulf, to PinBot, to Killer Instinct, to Perfect Dark, to Kameo. Rare has also had a track record of developing licensed games for the world’s leading brands – from WWE’s Wrestlemania games, to Marble Madness, to various Mickey games, to various Wheel of Fortune games, to finally, Who #%@&ing framed Roger Rabbit!? Rare went into a publishing agreement with Nintendo that would eventually mean that they became first party company of Nintendo – resulting in some of Nintendo’s brands being rebooted and retrofitted for modern times – one of the most successful of these games was Donkey Kong Country. Rare got purchased by Microsoft and they developed a few new IP’s for Microsoft from Xbox 360 launch, to now, when Microsoft is about to launch Kinect. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Kinect Sports!
