  • Ninja Gaiden 3 unmasked at E32011

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about Ninja Gaiden. The last entry in the series, Ninja Gaiden 2 and the following Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 both suffered an equal amount of controversy. NG2 was notoriously hated for the obnoxious gameplay faults, while NGS2 solved these annoyances, NGS2 created a new problem; the decrease in blood and gore, and instead the blood was replaced by purple gore (err….mist). People love Ninja Gaiden the way it was designed by Itagaki.

Ninja Gaiden 3 was announced at TGS last September. We were left only with a teaser image that stirred a lot of speculation. The teaser raised a lot of questions, and one of the most notorious questions of them is: “Is Ryu taking off his mask?” Tecmo answered with a trailer that was released during GDC:

I’m not sure if I am liking the whole “unmask.” I have always thought of the remake of Ninja Gaiden to be much better in character design to the very original NES Ninja Gaiden games. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the hell out of the originals for its extreme difficulty, I loved Ninja Gaiden and I still love it to this day, no matter how “old” it looks. It is still one of the best action games of its time.

The trailer has raised a lot of eyebrows, and a lot of “leave the mask alone!” responses. Ryu’s mysterious nature has never been in the spotlight. His face was shown in some Ninja Gaiden games. And so, therefore I don’t think the unmasking is about revealing Ryu. Some people are speculating that the unmasking is about someone else, others are saying that the reveal is about revealing Ryu’s “fiend” side, in other words, they’re saying that Ryu may have been infected, others are saying that something pissed Ryu off so badly he went and got some powers to take revenge.

If you look carefully in the trailer, he has some markings on his arm. His eyes are yellowish/orange. Some species in the reboot Ninja Gaiden games have different eye colors; one was wearing red, one was wearing green, one was wearing blue. In the reveal image Tecmo released, his eyes were “sparkly” green, his eyes has always been green, suggesting that Ryu wasn’t infected. I think that he was initiated into a clan – I am thinking a new clan. The face looks like it has some markings, though I’m not sure because it could also be blood splattering on his eye. If my memory serves me right Black Spider Clan members had bright yellow eyes to accompany their grey uniforms.

I notice something else in the trailer, it looks like the story takes place in a war-torn Ninja Gaiden universe. Most likely, Ryu may have lost his entire clan; that includes the legendary Dragon Sword. It seems like Ryu is so angry that he thrust his strength into his sword enough to make his enemy die a violent death.

One thing that the trailer shows is that the developers seem to be taking cues from God of War 3’s book placing you in the role of the enemy, while you’re supposed to survive that attack with Quick Time Event gameplay. QTE’s are prompts that tell you to press or turn a button.

Ninja Gaiden 3 is set to make its debut at this year’s E3, and the game will be playable at E32011. More information is forthcoming as we approach June 7th.

  • If there was a franchise to revive…

I’ve been playing a game on facebook. That game is rising in popularity, and why not, it’s a tried and true game and formula. CityVille was created by the same developers of FarmVille. Yes, Zynga has expanded its gaming portfolio. I have come to a realization that both FarmVille and CityVille is sending a message to developers. For one, in the late 1990’s we’ve seen some games that have farming elements – One of the most revered farming games of them all is Harvest Moon. But it has not met with a high demand for farming games. Although, at the time, the internet was pretty new, and the technology wasn’t as advanced as it is right now. Online gaming didn’t reach the mass-market yet.

For two, Viva Pinata has attracted enough market attention enough for a company like Zynga to come up with a solution for a better farming game, and they decided – “What the hell? Lets innovate this niche!” And so they did, and they did it on a platform that has been rising in popularity, it is now one of the most popular facebook games or mobile game on the market.

CityVille on the other hand is Zynga’s answer to a game like …Sim City. I dunno about you, but Electronic Arts has already lost a window of opportunity with CityVille on the market. If there’s a franchise to revive, it’s Sim City. So, what you waiting for, Electronic Arts? You don’t need to copy CityVille, all you need to do is revive the franchise and improve on it.

While you’re at it, why don’t you bring The Sims and other simulation games that is in your portfolio and put it on facebook, and mobile phones? I know someone that bought a computer just for The Sims. Yes, you heard me, just for one game.

This is also a message to other video game developers: If you have a simulation game that allows you to build, to harvest, to collect, to “loot,” to farm out stuff, and what have you. THIS is the time to either revive, reboot, or create a new Intellectual Property. And if you have a simple game to release on facebook, NOW would be the time. Now.

I’m going to run down the list of companies off the top of my head:

SEGA: Bring Columns to the mass market through mobile games, and yes, put it on facebook. I see a lot of people on mobile phones and facebook playing a game like Columns.

Natsume: Assuming you still own the trademark rights to the Harvest Moon name, its time you get back into the game. You’ve got a tough competition out there, but you have years of experience and marketshare over this Zynga.

Square Enix: You guys have a habit of including a farming element in some of your Final Fantasy games. So, my question: Why not a stand-alone game?

  • Black Ops’ first Map Pack revealed: First Strike

Call of Duty keeps getting bigger, bigger, and bigger. In 2009, Modern Warfare 2 garnered 550 million dollars in sales – taking the throne for the best selling video game of all time from Gran Theft Auto IV. This is merely just in one week. Well, in 2010, Activision outdone themselves by racking up 650 million dollars in just a week, barely even a week.

Activision and Microsoft made a deal in June. This contract between the two parties means that from Modern Warfare 2’s Map Packs on, the DLC’s that Activision develops are entirely time-exclusive to Microsoft’s Xbox Live platform. This means that for exactly one month, any DLC that Activision releases is exclusive to Microsoft’s green console.

Black Ops’ first Map Pack dubbed “First Strike” actually the third Map Pack to release under the agreement between Microsoft and Activision. Treyarch, the subsidiary of Acivision released a trailer talking about the Map Pack:

Treyarch released, yet another trailer, but only showing off the maps themselves, and some gameplay footage using the maps. It shows off some new gameplay mechanics:

With only a day away from release (tomorrow is Feb 1st), a user managed to get their hands on First Strike, and showed off the Zombie map called “Ascension.”

It will cost you 1200 or $15. What you get in this “Content Pack” is 4 Multiplayer Maps, and one co-op map for the Zombie mode in Black Ops. Treyarch says that the DLC is more than just a map pack.

  • Duke Nukem Forever finally gets release date!

Duke Nukem Forever finally gets release date!

It started as a project headed by series developers 3DRealms. 13 years of development was a result of engine changes, and from there, the title had switched from a simple PC game to a multiplatform title. It would and still is slated to arrive across PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. 3DRealms had to put up with a litigation with its former publisher for Duke Nukem Forever – better known as parent company of the Grand Theft Auto developers, Take-Two. 3DRealms eventually had to close. Take-Two also eventually backed off, and gave the development rights to Gearbox Studios, the developers that created the highly successful Borderlands game that was released across Xbox 360, PS3, and PC in 2009. The original developers behind Duke Nukem Forever leaked a work-in-progress trailer build, but was immediately taken down due to “terms of service” breach.

Warning: Contains content not suitable for kids. Seriously. You’ve been warned!

And here we are, in 2011. Gearbox announced that Duke Nukem Forever is basically finished, and ready to ship. They released a trailer which you see above; and revealed the final, hard-to-believe release date for Duke Nukem Forever. The showdown of @$$whoopin’ begins May 3, 2011! Oh yeah, baby.

  • Goodbye Xbox, hello Kinect.

    Goodbye Xbox, hello Kinect.

Xbox 360 was built to be the most profitable console Microsoft could make. Its been a long road for Microsoft to get to where they are now with Xbox 360, they invested millions, if not billions into the Xbox brand. All the great first party games, peripherals, and all the massive marketing they’ve done over the course of 10 years they’ve been in the business.

Last saturday, Microsoft launched Kinect, a motion sensor peripheral that I don’t think Microsoft is going to just give up on. Over the past 20 years, we’ve seen a lot of peripheral flops due to consumer acceptance, knowledge, and developer support. With kinect, Microsoft has created something I would like to call “stealth marketing” which will be a subject I will be covering this entire article.

You see, Japan is STILL not “sold” on the Xbox brand. I mean, it took Microsoft 2 to 4 years before Xbox was selling like hotcakes. It was the Xbox 360 that got them [the japanese] noticing the console. Large in part to the RPG market. During launch, you would see no lines for Xbox 360, until Microsoft decided “#@^& it, just drop the freakin’ price.” And then the RPG market was exploding for the Xbox 360 – third party developers started bringing out high-quality RPG’s on Xbox 360 starting with Lost Odyssey, to Tales of Vesperia, to the entire Fable series. Mass Effect was the breaking point for the Xbox division. In fact, it was the game that got the Xbox brand on the map. Here’s the problem, even with all this effort, Xbox 360 still have not sold the entire Japanese culture. I say this with confidence because I have been seeing a decline in the diversity of the types of games I see for the Japanese market. A friend of mine who is a writer for Xbox Evolved put it in the best possible way:

I think a lot of it’s problems are just the fact that is an american company competeting against two japanese companies on their home turf.

I mean, why else would Microsoft want to create Kinect? Why else would they want to take a huge risk and create a peripheral? Its because the diversity of the Xbox brand is actually on a decline EVEN though that the Xbox 360 is selling well. I don’t think Microsoft is just looking to install Xbox in your living room. I think Microsoft wants to expand the reach of Xbox 360 to a new market, which is a market that Wii has already touched for close to 5 years now.

Now, lets look at the history of Nintendo, shall we? In 2001 Nintendo broke the tradition of a new console launch. This tradition involves naming their consoles after their successor or use the company’s brand to sell the product. Nintendo 64 is the last console to do this until Nintendo DS. GameCube was a complete re-brand after the fiasco with Nintendo 64 – where Nintendo has gotten a lot of controversy with how they do business for the console’s mature market – or the lack thereof. The developer support was good early on, but declined to a level where its unbearable. Even then, GameCube was perceived as the “kiddy” console with the general gaming market. This is something Microsoft had to work with in the original Xbox – “bulky” console, “x” is bad in Japan, and so on. It was a PR nightmare for them until they released halo as the mascot of the console. Ya know, the face of Xbox. It went on to sell more than 10 million units on Xbox, and continued to put new record levels with later successors. Now, Wii on the other hand has gotten world-wide attention due to two things: Innovation, and the company’s new ‘open-ness’ factor with regards to their developer support. They even went as far as nipping the whole “Seal of Quality” trademark. Still, even then, Nintendo faces its own problems with the launch of Wii. While developer support is strong, the company ignores the hardcore market. This means not too many cool games are on the system. What I mean is, there isn’t a single game that identifies Nintendo to the hardcore market like Halo does for Microsoft, like Metal Gear for Sony, like God of War for Sony, like Gears of War does for Microsoft.

If GameCube’s and Wii’s trend is any indication, I think its inevitable that Microsoft would have to work on a complete console re-brand for their next console. By releasing Kinect, Microsoft has a better chance of world-wide acceptance of the technology, than they would when they in-fact release a new console with the new technology – that’s the whole point of the Kinect launch – consumer acceptance. Market acceptance.

See, its been a slow start for Kinect even with all the massive marketing they’ve done over the last year alone. Kinect sold 1 million in just 10 days (yes, I call that slow), while Move on the other hand sold 2.5 million in the first month, and the allocation of units were sold out by the month’s end. Sony by now would have 3 million units of Move controllers sold already. By december’s end, I predict a 2.5 million sold for Kinect.

The point that I am making here is that I don’t think Kinect is an ordinary peripheral, I think it also serves both as a learning tool for Microsoft, and a merketing ploy for a new Xbox console. I can smell a new microsoft console from a mile away with Kinect. In fact, I think Kinect is the re-brand that Microsoft wanted and needed. Notice how, all the news articles across the internet are calling the peripheral “Kinect” instead of “Xbox Kinect” that Microsoft has advertised in some promotional Ads, and Ad campaigns? Look at the far difference between the two overlays. So, when E32012 comes around, expect an announcement from Microsoft that a new console is being made, and the console’s name is Kinect. “Ladies and gentlemen, Microsoft Kinect!” And the technology that’s in the current Kinect will carry over to the new console as an on-board technology, obviously with major upgrades to the technology. And to keep the backward-compatibility intact, I think the current Xbox 360 controllers will be compatible with the new unit.

Kinect is getting a lot of developer support so it makes sense that Kinect would be the name of the next console. Besides, the Microsoft brand is dying off, so they need a stronger, better name for the new console. Now would be the perfect time to get started on a brand new name – Kinect may be it.

I don’t know about you, but that’s stealth marketing if I ever saw one. If this is what Microsoft is doing, then I expect a shakeup in the industry. Many technologies get transferred from one console to the other, but most of them aren’t as big as Kinect.

  • New Studio, New Game

    New Studio, New Game

God of War 3 and similar games have been making quite a big splash as of late. Mythology have garnered a lot of attention due to these games. One team is very passionate about mythology, that they’re ready to release a console game that garners the many religions, the many deities across many of the historical mythologies. Meet Steel Toe Productions which is a collection of game developers with previous portfolio at the world’s biggest game companies:

Rockstar – Wholly owned by Take Two Inc, these are the talented minds that brought you the legendary Grand Theft Auto series of games.

Blizzard – Merged with Call of Duty publisher Activision Inc in 2008, they developed the cult classics Warcraft, and Diablo.

Electronic Arts – The world’s biggest publisher in the video game industry. They make almost every single one of your sports games that you buy. On October 12th, Medal of Honor is set to compete head to head with the Call of Duty brand.

Interplay – The licensing kings in the gaming industry as of right now. Their recent license for Earthworm Jim HD had an incredible following.

And finally, and not the least:

Midway – Acquired by Warner Bros. during a bankruptcy sale last year. These are the creators and developers of the largely popular Mortal Kombat franchise.

Steel Toe Productions is formerly known as Classified Studio Productions. The team set out to educate people about beliefs of the deities across the mythology culture, albeit indirectly. They state in their bid for funding from KickStarter members that “We have a master plan for a game so fun that players will never realize they are being educated on and standing in the shoes of cultures from the well known.”

Steel Toe Productions plan to travel the many locals of the many cultures that spanned across many mythologies. They include Egypt, Greece, the Czech Republic, and some selection of the Aztec ruins. This is so that they could acquire better depiction of characters and stages through their travels. They advertise an attention to detail.

I understand that Battle of the Gods comes off as a religious game, but Steel Toe Productions wants to create a revolutionary video game concept: ‘creating the first truly socially relevant video game’. Mythology is relevant right now, seeing that people still believe in the apocalypse. To alleviate this the company has a well-intended emphasis on what I like to call “No Bias, No Favoritism.” As the game gathers all the figureheads of the many religious cultures. Jesus, Zeus, Ra, Anubis, and Ares just to name a few. Who wouldn’t want to see a battle between Zeus and Jesus!? The epic battle between Anubis, and The Grim Reaper!?

Yes, the game is a fighting game, pitting god against god. Midway almost tried this same concept. Not once, but twice. I think that Midway’s timing was worse off at the time of the release of both Mortal Kombat, and War Gods. Releasing it today is PERFECT timing since Mythology in general has risen in popularity.

Battle of the Gods is entirely 3D, but is piloted on a 2D plane. Each character will have variety of spells, and special powers. The company plans to make the game both violent and humorous – traits that made Mortal Kombat an international icon.

However, the company needs venture capital [ahem, money] from investors. They’re also looking for a publisher for the game. So, they’ve created a trailer which can be found on their project page on KickStarter. The company’s website is here. The teaser website for Battle of the Gods is here. To learn more about the history of both the company, and the game, its here.

  • Capcom readying Hack n’ Slash.

    Capcom readying Hack n’ Slash.

Capcom announced at their TGS2010 press conference that they’re at work on an action hack n’ slash game called Asura’s Wrath. Coming to both Xbox 360, and PS3, it is an action title that recounts a deity named Asura who is angry at the gods. Yes, this is a mythology-related game. Upon a little more research, I have found that the mythology that they are touching base on is the hindu mythology. Many people are billing the game as a title inspired by the God of War series. The problem arises in the character’s arm; its bionic. Anyhow, the story is scarce, but we do know that Asura is one angry god feeling betrayed by the gods. Enjoy the trailer:

The trailer’s awesome, eh? I say it is. I’ve never seen a game that actually depicts a god in their full form; a god that pushes its finger onto earth. The closest thing to it, would be the boss battles with the Titans in God of War 3.

  • Devil May Cry returns!

    Devil May Cry returns!

Devil May Cry has been out of the spotlight for quite some time. Mostly because Devil May Cry 4 has gotten a lot of backlash for taking a step backward. The evidence is in the sales numbers for Capcom – DMC4 sold less units than DMC3 [at least in Japan]. Many of the complaints towards DMC4 has more to do with the lack of gameplay variety, what people liked more in DMC3 was the gameplay, than it was for graphics. Lack of combos, lack of stylish gameplay, lack of overall game design – that ranges from level design, to character design, to the setting the game takes place in. Many gamers argue that DMC4 lacked the style that made DMC3 an instant classic.

Capcom recently has been hinting at a brand-new Devil May Cry game when they said they were going for a more “western” touch for the next DMC game. This month, Capcom filed a trademarked for DMC. Eh. What the hell? I liked saying “Devil May Cry,” Capcom! Its not the name that was the problem! Its your approach to DMC4!

You shouldn’t have just treated DMC4 as “oh! Its another sequel!” Did DMC2 teach you anything, Capcom? No? Well, that’s your fault for not learning from the mistakes of DMC2.

Anyhow, Tokyo Game Show is an on-going trade show, and Capcom announced a few games at their conference. One of them was the recently trademarked “DMC.” The trailer is below:

I am NOT liking this “reboot” or change, whatever it is. It looks more like a sequel than it is a reboot, because Dante looks like a twisted, demented, vile psycho, and not this legendary Dante Sparda with a cool, stylish attitude. But I’m open to this setting, and character it was a completely new brand.

I just think Capcom is actually digging themselves a bigger hole after DMC4 mostly because in DMC4 we saw a new main character, and now we’re seeing our beloved Dante as a brand new character.

We don’t know which console the game is going to appear on, we don’t know the story, nor do we know the release window for the game. Hell, we don’t know if this is a spin-off, prequel, sequel, or reboot.

  • The Gameplay Reveal of Mega Man Universe!

Its been a while since I posted the teaser trailer for Mega Man Universe. Shortly thereafter, I speculated about what Mega Man Universe might be. I said the game may be a 2D/3D game, with LBP-esque customization. It seems I was correct in my hypothesis that the game is indeed a 2D/3D game. See for yourself:

So far, I don’t see any camera pans as seen in the single player Mega Man 2.5D trailer. But the premise of 2D/3D is still there. The graphics seem really sharp, and vivid, vibrant. However, people are calling the trailer “boring.” Okay, so let me get this straight; you’ve been playing Mega Man for close to 20 years and now you’re complaining about how boring the game looks? Huh? Que? What the #%@&? When MM9 and 10 were revealed, you guy rejoiced, but not the case for Mega Man Universe? What the hell is going on here?

I can tolerate the character models for the main characters so far – I even think the art direction for the characters is good. Nothing too cute, nothing too big, and its the perfect medium. I like the level designs so far, too. I absolutely love the loading screen music – Hell, I think the loading screen’s design was a work of a genius, too! Speaking of art direction, South Korea is getting Rockman Online, and they have the most beautiful Mega Man trailer yet. See for yourself:

Too bad that thing is exclusive to South Korea. Damn, why do other countries get all the good stuff!?

We’ll know more about Mega Man Universe as the release date draws near.
