Epic Games reveals Unreal Engine 5

Epic Games has been riding a successful high with their games lately. Fortnite has been blowing up in the gaming industry, followed by their incredible fundraising Series where they got $1.25B (That’s “B” for Billions!), built their own digital distribution store. This morning, during Geoff Keighley’s “Summer Game Fest” livestream, Epic Games revealed the next generation Unreal Engine, named simply Unreal Engine 5. Most of what they covered on livestream was pretty technical, so they posted a blog post to go along with the announcement…

Nanite virtualized micropolygon geometry frees artists to create as much geometric detail as the eye can see. Nanite virtualized geometry means that film-quality source art comprising hundreds of millions or billions of polygons can be imported directly into Unreal Engine—anything from ZBrush sculpts to photogrammetry scans to CAD data—and it just works. Nanite geometry is streamed and scaled in real time so there are no more polygon count budgets, polygon memory budgets, or draw count budgets; there is no need to bake details to normal maps or manually author LODs; and there is no loss in quality.”

Lumen is a fully dynamic global illumination solution that immediately reacts to scene and light changes. The system renders diffuse interreflection with infinite bounces and indirect specular reflections in huge, detailed environments, at scales ranging from kilometers to millimeters. Artists and designers can create more dynamic scenes using Lumen, for example, changing the sun angle for time of day, turning on a flashlight, or blowing a hole in the ceiling, and indirect lighting will adapt accordingly. Lumen erases the need to wait for lightmap bakes to finish and to author light map UVs—a huge time savings when an artist can move a light inside the Unreal Editor and lighting looks the same as when the game is run on console.”

Epic Games outlined plans to migrate UE4 developers into active development of UE5…

    Unreal Engine 4 & 5 timeline

Unreal Engine 4.25 already supports next-generation console platforms from Sony and Microsoft, and Epic is working closely with console manufacturers and dozens of game developers and publishers using Unreal Engine 4 to build next-gen games.

Unreal Engine 5 will be available in preview in early 2021, and in full release late in 2021, supporting next-generation consoles, current-generation consoles, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android.

We’re designing for forward compatibility, so you can get started with next-gen development now in UE4 and move your projects to UE5 when ready.

We will release Fortnite, built with UE4, on next-gen consoles at launch and, in keeping with our commitment to prove out industry-leading features through internal production, migrate the game to UE5 in mid-2021.”

New Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath gameplay released

In August, it was revealed that Mortal Kombat 11 was going to get its first Kombat Pack starting in August. • PlayStation Studios branding revealed

    PlayStation Studios branding revealed

Starting with PlayStation 5, Sony plans to brand first-party games as “PlayStation Studios.” The branding will be used only on games that are developed and managed by Sony. To coincide with the announcement, Sony also released a new opening video. The branding is not exclusive to PlayStation devices such as PlayStation 4, and the upcoming PlayStation 5. First-Party PlayStation games being available on PC will bear the “PlayStation Studios” branding. However, there are certain games that will not have it ready in time for launch, like The Last of Us Part II, Ghosts of Tsushima, and Horizon Zero Dawn (for PC).

According to Eric Lempel, who is the Senior Vice President, and Head of Global Marketing at Sony Worldwide Studios, in communication with GameIndustry.biz, he clarified “We think this is a good way to let consumers know that, if they see it, then the quality games they’ve come to expect from us are here,” Lempel explained. “And this brand will exist for well-known existing franchises, as well as brand new franchises that we have yet to explore.”

Activision announces Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 Remastered

Activision was vague in a conference call on May 7th about remasters. [To read, or listen to the entire call, go here.] During this call, Activision talked about sales for Call of Duty, and other franchises. They recently released Modern Warfare 2 Remastered for PlayStation 4 on March 31st, and then, on April 30th, it was released to Xbox One, and PC. Players were wondering “What other remasters are they talking about?” Well, Activision in coordination with Geoff Keighley, revealed Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 on Geoff Keighley’s first “Summer Game Fest” livestreamed event. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 is a remaster of both games, with reworked features, and improvements over the original games of the same name(s) that originally released on PlayStation, and has been ported to every single console that can handle the engine.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater arrives to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One, Xbox One X, and PC on September 4th, 2020.

  • Call of Duty 2020 on schedule to release in 2020

Call of Duty 2020 on schedule to release in 2020

Yesterday (May 5th, 2020), Activision held a investor call for Quarter 1 of 2020. [Read, or listen to the entire call here.] They didn’t really announce a lot to write home about, but we did get something out of the call. Call of Duty’s 2020 title is in development, and according to President and Chief Operating Officer, said the 2020’s title “already looks great.”

Activision said that they do not plan on delaying the game, unless absolutely necessary. Bobby Kotick delved into the safety of their employees during the COVID19 pandemic…

“Our goal to connect the world through epic entertainment is more important to our players than ever before,” said Bobby Kotick, Chief Executive Officer of Activision Blizzard. “We delivered strong financial results for the first quarter, and are raising our full year outlook. I have been awestruck by the strength of our employees and their families during this difficult time. Whether managing healthcare or childcare, performing public service or community service, our teams around the world have shown ingenuity and resilience. In the face of so many difficulties, our employees have made certain that the joy, the engagement, and the benefits of gaming remain an effective way to help keep our 400 million players around the world connected and safe.”

Activision reiterated that the ‘premium Call of Duty title’ (Call of Duty 2020) is “on track for release later this year.” Rumor is that Call of Duty 2020’s development was a mess, so they had to switch lead developer over disagreements between Sledgehammer Games, and Raven Software. It’s rumored that Treyarch is taking over as lead, with Sledgehammer Games, and Raven Software as support.

We won’t know for sure until the game is fully revealed. It’s the month of May currently, so we’ll see teasers and reveal this month, since that’s the usual reveal pattern of Call of Duty games. The months of March, April, and May are usually when teasers, leaks, and reveals happen. But, so far, it hasn’t happened.

That’s not all, Activision revealed more information on sales numbers for their portfolio titles, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Activision announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sold more copies, and has more players than any point of Call of Duty’s lifespan. This announcement means from launch to the earnings call, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sold more than any Call of Duty title to date. I repeat that; more copies than any Call of Duty game in the franchise – that means more than CoD4, Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops 2 and 3.

Furthermore, Activision announced that the Call of Duty franchise earned $956 Million for Q1 (From January 2020 to March 2020) compared to 2019’s Q1 earnings at $794 Million.

Finally, Warzone was released on March 10, 2020. On April 10th, Call of Duty: Warzone reached 50 Million players. During the call, Activision announced that Warzone reached 60 Million players.

    CODWZ 60 Million Players
  • The Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima has new release dates

The Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima has new release dates

The Last of Us Part II was scheduled to be released on May 29, 2020. Ghost of Tsushima was scheduled to be released on June 26, 2020. The Last of Us Part II suffered a huge leak somewhere on the internet. It was spreading and spiraling out of control. Naughty Dog stepped in, released a statement on Twitter, and it reads…

“We know the last few days have been incredibly difficult for you. We feel the same. It’s disappointing to see the release and sharing of pre-release footage from development. Do your best to avoid spoilers, and we ask that you don’t spoil it for others.

The Last of Us Part II will be in your hands soon. No matter what you see, and hear, the final experience will be worth it.”

That’s not all, the worldwide studio head at Sony posted a new blog post on PlayStation Blog to talk about the new release dates. The Last of Us Part II is arriving on June 19, 2020. Ghost of Tsushima is arriving on July 17, 2020.
