Oblivion Getting Stuck

Hi,

I am at a point where I need to get into Fathis Aren's room, via going
through the North Wing entrance in Bravil Castle. No matter how many times I
try to go through the NW door, the game sticks right at the end of the next
scene loading progression bar, right when it finished the total progression
and is ready to load. When this happens, I have to cold boot the console by
turning it off either manually or with my remote.

I can go through other doors with no problems, not just this one. I am
willinng to forget this, if some has another way to get in Aren's castle
tower, otherwise, I am stuck getting through the Thieves Guild's quests, and
will have to finish the others (I am almost done with all of them).

Does anyone have a solution, like a workaround, and has anyone else
experienced this problem?

Just to add, it is not the console, as I have had no ill experiences with
any other part of the game, nor have I had any problems with any other game.

I would try removing the disk, turning the console off and then turning it
back on whilst holding the power button down for a bit. This apparently
clears the hard drive cache. Also according to oxm.co.uk there is a patch
available for this game soon

Thanks for this, I will definitely give it a try. If this doesn't work, I
may rent the game from a video store, and try it out just to see if maybe my
disk isn't faulty, though I see no apparent defect/scratches, etc. I have to
admit, my console hasn't been running great, but sufficient (for want of a
better word), as it (seemingly) sometimes stalls on any game I have/use, or
locks up to where I have to cold boot it. If the rented game and your method
doesn't work, then I will have the console replaced by MS, since I have a
two year warranty extension on it. I will post back with results.

To clear the cache... hold down the A button whilst starting the console
with Oblivion in the drive... let the A button go once the Bethesda
Softworks logo is displayed.

Ok, I tried the defrag thing (the correct way LOL), and that didn't do a
thing. I even rented the game to rule out a fault in my disk, that didn't
work. Called tech support, they suggested removing the hard drive, then
reconnecting it (I don't what that does since the game plays from the game
disk itself, only saves/auto saves default to the memory devices?), that
didn't work. I even tried playing the game without the HDD, just using my
memory card; the console still locks up at the point in question (but still
I can play everything else I have tired so far). So, now I am going to take
the chance that the console is at fault, since I have not read anywhere else
that this particular issue is happening (I am the only one so far for this
particular point in the game).

I am sending it back to MS and it will take around 10 days total to get it
back. If that doesn't work, I can only think (since the game is not
physically faulty) that somehow this scene doesn't load unless other
criteria has been met elsewhere, and I just simply hit that point in the
game where it is stuffed otherwise no matter how I try to play on elsewhere
in the game, and then attempt to come back to this same point (which doesn't
work still after that). If that turns out to be the case, I will either have
to start the game all over again (losing well over 45 hours of playing
time), or I may seek a refund on the game, since I already know that it
isn't the physical game disk anymore, but maybe a flaw in the game itself.

Anyway, thanks for the help guys, and I will post back with results when I
get the console back.

OK,

It turns out it is the game, but only because it is stuffed at this point,
as I suggested, I may done other things earlier that negated this part of
the journey as doable. I had a save point on my memory stick that was about
250 saves behind where my problem is. I went to that save, loaded it, and
then proceeded to the NW Bravil Castle door to Fathis' room. Guess what, it
opened and I could go in.

My solution now; play my most progressed game out and finished all of the
quests there to get the achievements, and then load the earlier game to
simply finish the Thieves quests and get that those achievements done.

I thought holding the A button while Oblivion was booting was the way to
clear the game cache for this title. Google for Oblivion cache issue
