Black Ops II multiplayer unlocks explained by Treyarch

Treyarch’s David Vonderhaar dished some details on the multiplayer progression system for Call of Duty: Black Ops II. While the progression system is still based on the first game for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, the new Create a Class system does bring some interesting changes.

When players reach level 4, they’ll unlock the ability to use Create a Class in Black Ops II multiplayer. Since players receive one unlock token at each level they start out with four unlock tokens when they get started creating their custom classes. But wait, there’s more. Treyarch also gives you “about a dozen things you can equip ‘for free’,” Vonderhaar explains. This means you don’t have to spend an unlock token on them It’s effective one item from each category.”

    • 1 Assault Rifle
    • 1 SMG
    • 1 LMG
    • 1 Shotgun
    • 1 Sniper Rifle
    • 1 Perk from each of the 3 perk categories
    • 1 lethal grenade
    • 1 tactical grenade/equipment

Level 5 then unlocks a perk, level 6 equipment, level 6 Scorestreaks, level 8 another perk and level 9 another Scorestreak. From here through level 55 a pattern begins to emerge that generally follows this setup.

    • Level 10 – Weapon + Something Else
    • Level 11 – Equipment (either lethal or tatical).
    • Level 12 – Scorestreak

Vonderhaar warns that there will be some slight statistical variations to this pattern “when they make sense…because the match can’t be perfect.”

As mentioned above, Black Ops II multiplayer features 55 ranks before you hit Prestige levels. The amount of XP needed to reach 55 is about the same as Black Ops or World at War but may not take as long due to players earning more XP with medals and challenges.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II hits the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on November 13.

COD: Black Ops Zombies now available for non-Xperia Android devices

Thirty days have passed since Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies made its Xperia-exclusivefirst appearance on the Google Play Store, which means that non-Xperia owning Android users can finally get their hands on it.Worryingly, though, reports of the latest update crashing the game are piling up on the User Reviews section of the game’s page on Google Play.

One user, Paul, complained: “Incomplete install, feel free to actually test your software before you release it to the public.” Paul then proceeded to award the game one star.

Another user, Stephen, echoed Paul‘s disgruntled sentiment, stating: “Installed and then won’t download the additional files no matter what. Would like a fix asap or money back.”

    No more room in hell

The game itself, which won a Silver Award on iOS, is all about shooting legions of the reanimated dead, either on your own or with the help of up to three other human beings over a local wi-fi network.

Featuring three maps – Kino Der Toten, Ascension, and Call of the Dead – for you to sink your teeth into, as well as the slightly odd Deap-Ops Arcade (which turns the game into a top-down shooter), Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies contains enough content for even the most ardent undead slayer.

You can grab the game from the Google Play Store for £4.99 / $6.99 by clicking here, although bear in mind that it might not work.

  • Coroner: under-18s should not play Call of Duty

Coroner: under-18s should not play Call of Duty

But the coroner, John Pollard, said he was disturbed by the schoolboy’s use of
violent games and issued a warning to other parents.

Recording an open verdict at the inquest in Stockport, Greater Manchester, Mr
Pollard said: “The age limitations on these various computer games are there
for a very valid reason. Why, quite frankly, anybody would want to be
    playing them, I don’t know.

“It is very important that young children don’t play them or have access to
    them.

“I make a plea with parents to keep a very close eye on their children in that
    way.”

The Call of Duty series has sold 100 million copies around the world but has
been dogged by controversy. Anders Breivik, the Norwegian mass killer,
claimed he “trained to kill” his 77 victims by playing the Modern Warfare
    game.

Keith Vaz, the Labour MP and chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee,
has called on the British Board of Film Classification to place more
stringent controls on games with violent content.

Mrs Green said she thought the game was harmless fun and allowed Callum to
play it with his stepfather, David White.

She told the coroner: “Callum was very mature. Kids play worse games than
that. He was allowed to play Call of Duty but not other games. He was only
allowed a few hours on the PC.

“Does that make me a bad parent? Because I let him play those games?

“I banned him from other games where they slash their throats and stuff, I
stopped him playing that, but Call of Duty I didn’t.”

Callum hanged himself at the family home in Brinnington, near Stockport, in
March last year. The inquest heard that he was off school that day but was
grounded by his mother for staying out late with his girlfriend the night
    before.

He went to his bedroom and was discovered at 4.50pm.

Mrs Green described her son as a happy child who had never given any
indication that he wanted to harm himself.

  • Black Ops 2 level progression system, reveals unlock rotations

Black Ops 2 level progression system, reveals unlock rotations

As the release for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 approaches, Treyarch is attempting to deliver fans essential information that will be featured in the final release of the game. Recently, Treyarch’s David Vonderhaar, lead game designer on Black Ops 2, has decided to give fans some insight on how the level progression system will work in Black Ops 2.

Over on the official Black Ops 2 forums, Vonderhaar has come forth with a sizable post about how the level progression system will play out. In doing so, Vonderhaar confirms that Black Ops 2 will include 55 levels in the multiplayer leveling system. It is stated that the total amount of XP required to advance through the levels will be similar to World at War and the original Modern Warfare. “I’d say it’s easier to level up, because you earn more XP than ever before with our Medals, Challenges we make available to you, as well as the leveling up guns themselves which grant bonus XP.”

In detailing the specific rotation of unlocks throughout each level acquired, Vonderhaar states the following:

You unlock Create a Class at level 4, just like our last game. You get 1 unlock token every time you level up. So at level 4, you have 4 tokens.

At level 4, we give you about a dozen things you can equip “for free.” This means you don’t have to spend an unlock token on them. It’s effectivelly one item from each category.

    • 1 Assault Rifle
    • 1 SMG
    • 1 LMG
    • 1 Shotgun
    • 1 Sniper Rifle
    • 1 Perk from each of the 3 perk categories
    • 1 lethal grenade
    • 1 tactical grenade/equipment

We also give you about a dozen things you can spend your unlock tokens on. 1 item from each category, plus you can unlock a Wildcard with an unlock token.

You get a perk at level 5. You get equipment at level 6.

At level 7 we unlock Scorestreaks. You get 3 for free and 3 you can optionally spend unlock tokens on.

At level 8 we give you a Perk. At level 9 we give you new Scorestreak.

At level 10, we start to settle into a pattern. Their are exceptions, but the pattern is generally like this. At every major rank change, which is every 3 levels, we give you a gun and usually “something else” as a bonus for reaching a major rank change.

In general, it goes like this.

    • Level 10 – Weapon + Something Else
    • Level 11 – Equipment (either lethal or tatical).
    • Level 12 – Scorestreak

This pattern then repeats through all 55 levels with some minor statstical variations or bonuses when they make sense and because they math can’t be perfect.

As stated in this post, Treyarch will be listening to fan feedback on suggestions to the progression system incorporated into Black Ops 2 multiplayer. If you have any feedback to give Treyarch about specific equipment unlocks at certain levels, be sure to reach out to them.

  • Black Ops 2, Borderlands 2 & Halo 4 Uncovered In X360 Issue 89 and Cover

Black Ops 2, Borderlands 2 & Halo 4 Uncovered In X360 Issue 89 and Cover

X360 goes behind the scenes with Gearbox’s anticipated follow-up to Borderlands in its latest issue discovering that when you have a bazillion guns, you need enemies that are much smarter than you average cannon fodder.

Talking to Gearbox’s lead AI programmer, X360 discovered that a surprising amount of thought has gone into Borderlands 2’s enemy design.

Game difficulty tends to be pretty hard to manage once you start upping the number of players. How do things vary dependent on the number of human players in the game?

Jasper Foreman: “Well, there’s the basic stuff like adding a little bit more health and a little bit more shield, that kind of thing. You’ll see them try to do a little bit more in the way of flanking behaviours. But it also comes down to target priority.

“For instance, you might be playing as a Gunzerker, and as a single player you’re going to just run in there and take up all the aggro; but if you’re multiple players, the enemies have multiple targets to take care of.

“They might see what [the Gunzerker] is doing and try to follow the aggro, but some guy off to the side might decide he’s not going to be fooled by just that and try to go around, get round the back to the sniper.”

Here’s a look at the rest of the issue:

  • 14-year-old hangs himself after playing Call of Duty

14-year-old hangs himself after playing Call of Duty

“Why quite frankly anybody would want to be playing them, I don’t know.

“It’s very important that young children don’t play them or have access to
    them.

“I make a plea with parents to keep a very close eye on their children in that
    way.

“For whatever reason, and it is I’m afraid somewhat mysterious, Callum just
decided that he was going to put the tie around his neck and suspend himself
    from the bunk beds.

“Was that with the intention of killing himself or just to give you a shock,
    we don’t know.”

Before he died at his family home in Brinnington, near Stockport in March last
year, Callum had been upstairs in his bedroom playing on the computer.

The hearing was told he had been a fan of playing Call of Duty, where players
adopt the role of “soldiers” fighting in contemporary wars.

When asked about the game by the coroner, Callum’s mother Emma Green became
visibly upset, admitting she had known of the age restriction.

She told the coroner: “Callum was 14, 15, he was very mature.

“Kids play worse games than that. He was allowed to play Call of Duty but not
other games. He was only allowed a few hours on the PC.

“Does that make me a bad parent? Because I let him play those games?

“I banned him from other games where they slash their throats and stuff, I
stopped him playing that, but Call of Duty I didn’t.”

The court heard that on the day Callum had died he had stayed home from school
with a sprained ankle and had argued with his younger sister when she
returned that afternoon about making a sandwich.

A plate had been broken in the kitchen and Callum was told he was grounded by
    his mother.

Callum became quite upset but remained downstairs with the family, having
something to eat and drink in the kitchen before going to his room to use
    the computer,

His mother said: “I was watching telly and I went upstairs about 4:50pm and
    that’s when I found him.”

The boy was described as “friendly and popular” by his school.

In May Keith Vaz, the chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee, called for
greater restrictions on violent video games after the Norwegian mass killer
Anders Breivik claimed he “trained” on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

  • COD Black Ops 2: Earning selected perks

COD Black Ops 2: Earning selected perks

If you are looking forward to Black Ops 2 which releases on November 13, there’s no doubt that you have been keeping an eye on the list of new perks that will be featured in multiplayer mode.

The game will include new perks such as Dexterity and Fast Hands, but one of the main talking points remains the infamous Ghost perk and how it will play out in Black Ops 2. If you played the first game, you’ll know that there were a lot of complaints on how it was a paradise for campers as it allowed you to stay completely undetected, both from UAV planes and from killstreaks like the gunship.

The pleasing thing to note is that Treyarch seem to be treating Ghost as a special case for Black Ops 2, with designer David Vonderhaar confirming on Twitter that big changes are going to come into effect for Ghost in Black Ops 2. You may have already heard via leaked information, but the Ghost perk is only going to be effective when players are actually moving – i.e eliminating the option to camp.

That is a good change in our opinion, but it gets better – Vonderhaar recently said on Twitter that players are going to have to work extra hard to earn selected perks such as Ghost. It means that players won’t be able to select Ghost from the very start of the game and there should be less complaints when players finally receive it – as they would earn the right to wear it with pride for getting to a higher level.

Are you happy to see Treyarch spending extra time to make sure that the controversial perks from the first game are balanced out for Black Ops 2? What about the infamous Stopping Power perk? Treyarch last used this perk in World at War after deciding not to include it in Black Ops 1. Would you like to see Stopping Power return or not? Don’t forget there’s a list of scorestreaks here.
