Black Ops II multiplayer unlocks explained by Treyarch

Treyarch’s David Vonderhaar dished some details on the multiplayer progression system for Call of Duty: Black Ops II. While the progression system is still based on the first game for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, the new Create a Class system does bring some interesting changes.

When players reach level 4, they’ll unlock the ability to use Create a Class in Black Ops II multiplayer. Since players receive one unlock token at each level they start out with four unlock tokens when they get started creating their custom classes. But wait, there’s more. Treyarch also gives you “about a dozen things you can equip ‘for free’,” Vonderhaar explains. This means you don’t have to spend an unlock token on them It’s effective one item from each category.”

  • 1 Assault Rifle
  • 1 SMG
  • 1 LMG
  • 1 Shotgun
  • 1 Sniper Rifle
  • 1 Perk from each of the 3 perk categories
  • 1 lethal grenade
  • 1 tactical grenade/equipment

Level 5 then unlocks a perk, level 6 equipment, level 6 Scorestreaks, level 8 another perk and level 9 another Scorestreak. From here through level 55 a pattern begins to emerge that generally follows this setup.

  • Level 10 – Weapon + Something Else
  • Level 11 – Equipment (either lethal or tatical).
  • Level 12 – Scorestreak

Vonderhaar warns that there will be some slight statistical variations to this pattern “when they make sense…because the match can’t be perfect.”

As mentioned above, Black Ops II multiplayer features 55 ranks before you hit Prestige levels. The amount of XP needed to reach 55 is about the same as Black Ops or World at War but may not take as long due to players earning more XP with medals and challenges.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II hits the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on November 13.
