It’s been a while since the last Call of Duty title was revealed. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III was revealed, and went on to sell moderately well, with consistent post-launch support until Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games fought over supremacy over who is the lead developer. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was revealed, and sold pretty modestly. Fans were curious about what Treyarch is gonna do with their new Black Ops 6. There was a follow-up known as Black Ops 7. However, Black Ops 7 brought the series to its lowest sales, ever recorded in series history. Call of Duty’s lowest sales point was World at War in 2008.
Microsoft acquired Activision in 2023. In that acquisition, Microsoft now owns Call of Duty. In an effort to clean up their image from two franchise-defining declines which are Xbox One/Series consoles on the decline, and Call of Duty on the decline, Microsoft demoted Phil Spencer, and replaced him with Asha Sharma to repair their Xbox image. On May 21, 2026 – Infinity Ward’s studio leaders got a shakeup, and posted a podcast with a message that reads the following…

We build visceral, immersive combat experiences that hit different.
As a new chapter begins for this studio, we’re focused on what defines us: passion, precision, obsession, and an unrelenting drive to make the best entertainment in the industry.
Our next game is the result of that mindset.
Determined. Bold. Relentless. Built by a team pushing every detail, every system, every moment to its limit.
On behalf of everyone at IW, we’re proud of what we’ve been building and excited to finally start sharing it with you.
