Uncharted Movie Coming

The first-ever movie based on the Uncharted game series will make its debut in theaters on June 10, 2016, Sony Pictures announced today, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

This news coincides with Sony delaying the next Spider-Man film, The Amazing Spider-Man 3, until 2018. It was previously set to hit theaters on the same date that Uncharted will now occupy; another Spider-Man-themed movie, The Sinister Six (which features six of Spider-Man's adversaries) will launch later in 2016.

The Uncharted film's director, Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief), said recently that filming for the movie will get underway early next year. A leading actor has yet to be chosen; Mark Wahlberg was set to play Nathan Drake at one point, but that fell apart when a previous director, David O. Russell, dropped out of the project. Another director, Neil Burger, was subsequently attached to the film but also decided to drop out.

Gordon said last week that he loves the complexity and frankly the sophistication of the storytelling in the game," but doesn't want to simply retell the story featured in the games. "I feel like the people who play the games and know them well don't want to just see the same story told," he said. "You want extra shades."

A new Uncharted game is currently in development at Naughty Dog for the PS4. It does not yet have a release date, and Sony has not indicated whether it plans to tie its release into that of the film.

Seems kinda pointless to release a movie of Uncharted. I'd rather play the game than watch a movie of this.

That didn't stop them from making two Tomb Raider movies, though the older Tomb Raiders (Legend being an exception) were less story-heavy than the Uncharted games. Though I think being story-heavy would be more of an incentive to make a movie on it because there's a lot of different stuff they could try to base it on, or build it from.

I enjoy it when they bring game series into their own movies. Even when the movies are nothing like the games at all, like the Super Mario Bros movie, they're always an interesting watch, just so I can watch them to see how faithful they are or just to see all of the references they will make to the actual series, itself.
