Witcher 4 shown off during Unreal Fest Orlando 2025

Epic Games has been a long-standing game development studio. Epic Games was founded in 1991 as “Potomac Computer Systems,” then changed their name to “Epic MegaGames, Inc.” in 1992. In 1999, Tim Sweeny renamed the company again, as simply “Epic Games, Inc.” Unreal was released on May 22, 1998 for PC. Unreal II was released on February 4, 2003 for PC, and a port of the game on Xbox in 2004. Unreal Tournament was released on November 22, 1999. It was ported to PlayStation 2, and Dreamcast shortly thereafter. Unreal Tournament got a major update in 2004 aptly as “Unreal Tournament 2004.” Unreal Championship was exclusively released for Xbox in 2002. By now, you should now understand that the branding of “Unreal” has been etched into legacy for many years now. Unreal Engine was created in 1995 and released in 1998 with the release of “Unreal.” Since then, Unreal Engine has become extremely popular that it is used in your favorite games today. Some notable games are: Deus Ex, Duke Nukem Forever, Portal 2, BioShock series, some Splinter Cell series, some Tom Clancy games (outside of Splinter Cell), the Batman: Arkham series, some Borderlands games, DmC: Devil May Cry, Gears of War series, and…

The. Biggest. Game. in the world today…

Fortnite.

Originally released as a standalone game as “Fortnite: Save the World.” Fortnite went on to rebrand itself as “Fortnite Battle Royale,” a 100 player battle royale experience where you are dropped into a world with 100 other combatants in a battle royale experience. Fortnite is a free-to-play battle royale game that is constantly updated procedurally. It spawned a new marketplace inside Fortnite itself, and extends into Unreal Engine itself. There is a Fortnite marketplace, and there is an Unreal Engine marketplace. Since inception, Epic Games has made revenue from the backend of Unreal Engine, and is currently in the front-end and publically. Epic Games is a private company, but doesn’t require talking about growth, but they do it anyway, because they are proud of Unreal Engine’s growth over the decades its been on the market.

Every year, Epic Games hosts their “State of Unreal” event to talk about updates surrounding Unreal Engine. The festival kicked off with a livestream by Epic Games, and the headline for the event was none other than Witcher 4, which was said to be in development using Unreal Engine. Enjoy the livestream…

Unreal Engine 5.6 is available now, and is for use for any Unreal Engine project in the pipeline as of this writing.
