  • Call Of Duty beats Far Cry 3 and Wii U in UK charts

Call Of Duty beats Far Cry 3 and Wii U in UK charts

    Update:

Although Chart-Track will not reveal official UK sales figures for the Wii U, trade paper
MCV claims that the figure is 40,000 across the three different hardware bundles. That’s exactly a tenth of what it sold in the U.S., which sounds about right as the U.S. market is roughly 10 times bigger than the UK.

Most importantly for Nintendo the attach rate (the number of games sold per console) is estimated at 2:1, not including digital sales. That’s not only a good ratio but it means that all the Wii Us that were sold in the UK were sold at a profit, since the console is sold at a slight loss and Nintendo needs to sell one game for each one to move into the black.

    Original story:

Ubisoft’s Far Cry 3 has become the ninth biggest launch of the year in the UK, just behind last week’s Hitman: Absolution. It still wasn’t enough to dislodge Black Ops II from the top of the UK charts though, which thanks to the release of the Wii U version saw only a 35 per cent drop in sales this week.

The Wii U made predictably little impact on the top 10, as is usually the case with new hardware launched during the Christmas rush. Also predictably Chart-Track gave no indication of how the Wii U is selling, although the fact that it keeps blinking in and out of stock at many retailers suggests things have started relatively well for Nintendo.

The only hard information offered is that the Nintendo Land Premium Pack accounted for 60 per cent of Wii U hardware sales, followed by the ZombiU Premium Pack at 30 per cent, and the cheaper Basic Pack at just 10 per cent.

The best-selling Wii U game, including bundled versions, was Nintendo Land at 11 in both the multiformat and individual formats chart. New Super Mario Bros. U was at number 14 in both charts, and ZombiU at number 16 in the individual formats chart and 17 in the multiformat one.

Overall there were five Wii U games in the multiformat top 10 and 10 in the top 40. But as usual the individual formats chart gives a more precise picture of what sold best, and there were no other Wii U games in its top 40 beyond the big three.

Nevertheless FIFA 13 saw a jump in sales of 19 per cent, with Just Dance 4 up by 48 per cent, and Skylanders Giants up by 4 per cent – all of which Chart-Track attributes to the release of the Wii U versions.

Although Nintendo may release exact sales figures if things have gone particularly well (they did announce that the Wii U sold
400,000 consoles in its first week in the U.S.) it’s likely we won’t know exactly how the launch has gone until their next financial report.

This Friday sees the one and only major game launch for December, in the form of 3DS exclusive Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Although it may breach the top 20 it’s unlikely to be a front runner for the UK Christmas number one, which at the moment is still looking like a foregone conclusion for Black Ops II.
